Ulysses S. Grant (April 27, 1822 – July 23, 1885)

Born Hiram Ulysses Grant in Point Pleasant, Ohio (around 25 miles southeast
of Cincinnati in southern Monroe Township, Clermont County, Ohio), Grant
became the 18th President of the United States and served 2 terms (1869–1877).
His two consecutive terms as President stabilized the nation after the American
Civil War and during the turbulent Reconstruction period.  As President, Grant
won passage of the Fifteenth Amendment which gave constitutional protection
for African American voting rights.

Quiet but determined and a graduate of the United States Military Academy at
West Point, he earned the rank of General and under Grant, the Union Army
defeated the Confederate military and effectively ended the war with the
surrender of Robert E. Lee's army at Appomattox.
