Situated atop the rolling hillsides of Mt. Lookout, the Cincinnati
Observatory is home to two historic telescopes including the United
State's oldest professional telescope which is still in use nightly by the
general public. Two handsome National Historic Landmark buildings -
one designed in 1873 by Samuel Hannaford - complement the
Observatory's park-like setting.

The Cincinnati Observatory was built by Ormsby M. Mitchel atop Mount
Ida, a hill that overlooks downtown Cincinnati. The cornerstone was laid
on November 9, 1843, and presiding over the occasion was former
President John Quincy Adams. At 77 years old, it was to be his last public
speech, and Mount Ida was renamed to Mount Adams in his honor.

In 1871, the Observatory came under the control of the University of
Cincinnati and in 1873 it was moved from Mt. Adams to Mt. Lookout,
where it remains today. In 1998 the Observatory became a National
Historic Landmark.

The Cincinnati Observatory Center promotes the study and practice of
astronomy among a broad audience and assists professional and amateur
astronomers, schools and universities to further their educational efforts
on behalf of astronomy.

The Cincinnati Observatory Center:
• Promotes public programming and provide educational opportunities
and resources for the public at large, school and university educators and
students, and professional and amateur astronomers,
• Conducts public astronomical viewing,
• Holds classes and workshops,
• Gives tours, displays, and presentations, and
• Showcases the unique facility as “The Birthplace of American
Astronomy” by continually maintaining and improving the buildings,
grounds, and collection of historic artifacts, while striving to adopt and
integrate the latest technology in fulfillment of its mission.

There are regular viewings through both historical telescopes as well as
tours and additional programs. The Observatory also has an extensive
outreach program, providing astronomical education for the
Ohio/Kentucky/Indiana region.
