John Good "Long John" Reilly (born October 5, 1858 – died May 31, 1937)
was a 19th century baseball player. As a first baseman who played for the
Cincinnati Red Stockings/Reds 1880-1891, he debuted with the Cincinnati
Red Stockings on May 18, 1880. He retired from the game with the
Cincinnati Reds October 3, 1891.
At 6'3", Reilly was tall for his era, earning him the moniker "Long John".
He is one of two Major League Baseball players to achieve the rare feat “hit
for the cycle” in the same month - the accomplishment of one batter hitting
a single, a double, a triple, and a home run in the same game! He did it in
1883 during the month of September.
A Cincinnati-native and dominant first baseman in the 1880's, Reilly wore
a Reds uniform for his nine-season Major League career and held Reds
records for most singles, double, triples, home runs, runs scored, RBI and
games played. The Reds starting first baseman from 1883 to 1891, John
Reilly was the club's leading hitter for most of the 1880's and paced the club
in home runs, RBI and batting average with a .301 mark. Although the
records he held have since been broken, Reilly remains one of only four
players in Reds history to lead the league in home runs twice.
He was inducted into the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame in June 2012.
