Metro*Plus Is Here
Herb Society Awards Scholarships to Cincinnati State Students
Being hailed as a real “Plus” for Montgomery Road, a new, limited-stop bus service offered by Metro began Aug.
19th.  The new service called
Metro*Plus is a faster, limited-stop transit service known as Bus Rapid Transit
(BRT), which is gaining in popularity nationally.  Ten new, bright-blue, specially branded BRT-style buses and
Metro*Plus bus stop signs will make it easy to identify Metro*Plus service. The bus profile is sleek and
contemporary, with padded seats for comfort and LED destination signs for improved visibility.

For commuters going to Uptown or The Banks, the new service will connect Kenwood, Xavier, Uptown,
downtown, The Banks.  In addition to improving access to Uptown jobs and medical care, Metro*Plus also will
serve as a college connector, linking the University of Cincinnati and Xavier University, with quick transfers
to Cincinnati State Technical & Community College.  Metro recently dedicated the first Metro*Plus bus to
former SORTA Board Trustee William Mallory, Sr., in honor of his many years of service to public transit in
Greater Cincinnati.

Metro*Plus is one component of Metro’s new go*FORWARD transit plan.  In 2012, Metro conducted a
comprehensive transit planning that included extensive research, public meetings, on-board and on-line
surveys, focus groups, and community events that reached thousands of people.   In addition to Metro*Plus,
improvements include:

•        More service in major corridors
•        More crosstown routes to reduce the focus on downtown transfers
•        New destinations, including the new Mercy Health West Hospital and more shopping areas
•        Shorter travel times by streamlining several routes
•        Increased efficiency and productivity

The final plan, presented to the community this spring, will be implemented in August and December.  All
changes are being made within Metro’s 2013 operating budget.  Metro, a tax-supported public service of the
Southwest Ohio Regional Transit Authority, provides about 17 million rides per year in the City of Cincinnati
and Hamilton County, with limited service to Butler, Clermont, and Warren counties.

High-fives Metro!

The Herb Society of Greater Cincinnati, a non-
profit organization dedicated to promoting
interest in growing and using herbs and the
exchange of information and experiences related
to herbs, awarded scholarships to two Cincinnati
State students for the 2013-14 school year.

Both recipients are majoring in Landscape
Horticulture:

• Bessie Clark. a resident of Madisonville, spent
many years working in the insurance and banking
industries in accounting.   She has now decided to
follow her passion involving working with
plants.   Since entering the program in January
2012, Ms. Clark has maintained a grade point
average of 3.28.

• Robert “Leo” Clarke III, a Mount Lookout
resident, traveled this year with Cincinnati State’s Landscape Horticulture Club to the Professional Landcare
Network’s Student Career Days national competition at Auburn University and placed well in his events (sales
and herbaceous plant identification).  As the principal of the Leo Clarke Jazz Band, he is well known in the
community as a blues musician who regularly performs several benefit concerts each year.

Congrats to the recipients and High-fives to the Herb Society of Greater Cincinnati!
